Their name derives from the Ancient Greek φάσμα (phásma), meaning 'apparition, phantom,' referring to their remarkable resemblance to vegetation while being animals. They are found on all continents except Antarctica, with the greatest diversity in the tropics and subtropics, and are herbivorous, nocturnal, and known for their camouflage.
