Plecoptera, commonly known as stoneflies, are an order of insects found worldwide except Antarctica, with about 3,500 described species. They are considered one of the most primitive groups of Neoptera, with close relatives from the Carboniferous and Lower Permian periods, though modern diversity appears to be of Mesozoic origin. Stoneflies have a generalized anatomy with chewing mouthparts, long antennae, large compound eyes, and two or three ocelli. Their legs end in two claws, and both nymphs and adults have long paired cerci. The name Plecoptera means 'braided-wings,' referring to the complex venation of their two pairs of membranous wings, which fold flat over the back. Most are not strong fliers, and some species are entirely wingless. A few wingless species, such as the Lake Tahoe benthic stonefly, are among the few insects that are exclusively aquatic from birth to death. Nymphs are aquatic and live in the benthic zone of well-oxygenated lakes and streams, though a few species in New Zealand have terrestrial nymphs in very moist environments. Nymphs resemble wingless adults but often have external gills on the head, thorax, or around the anus, and can also absorb oxygen through the exoskeleton. Most nymphs are herbivorous, feeding on submerged leaves and algae, but many hunt other aquatic arthropods. Females lay up to one thousand eggs, dropping them into water or attaching them to rocks with a sticky coating. Eggs typically hatch in two to three weeks, though some species undergo diapause during dry seasons. Nymphs remain in that form for one to four years, undergoing 12 to 36 molts before emerging as terrestrial adults. Adults live only a few weeks, some not feeding at all, and stay near the water they hatched from.
